• Question 2: How did Adam and Eve break their covenant obligation to God and what did the serpent promise them?
  
  • Answer: They rebelled against God's sovereignty over their lives by eating from the forbidden tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  The serpent promised them they would be like gods (Gen 2:15-17; 3:1-5).
  
  
  
• Question 3: What was the covenant sign God gave Noah and all creation?
  
  • Answer: The rainbow was the sign of the covenant and God's promise that He would never destroy the earth by water again (Gen 9:12-17).

  • Answer: It was the first corporate covenant made with a people as one united body instead of with an individual and his family, and for the first time liturgical worship was defined and laws given to provide guidance in holiness.
  
  
  
• Question 9: What covenant promise did God make to King David and what was the significance of that promise?
  
  • Answer: In the eternal covenant God made with David, He promised David that his throne would endure forever (1 Sam 7:11-17; 23:5; 2 Chr 31:5; Sir 45:25).  That eternal covenant was fulfilled in Jesus Christ the true Davidic heir and king of Kings of the eternal kingdom.
  
  
  
• Question 10: What 6^th century BC prophet promised a New Covenant that would replace the old Sinai Covenant?  When was the fulfillment of the promise announced?
  
  • Answer: Jeremiah (Jer 31:31-34).  The fulfillment of that promise was announced by Jesus at the Last Supper (Lk 22:20).
  
  
  
• Question 11: What "sign" did Jesus tell the Pharisees would prove His divine authority and would be the only sign His generation would receive?
  
  • Answer: The sign of the prophet Jonah who was entombed in the belly of the fish/whale for three days before he was resurrected on the third day (Mt 12:39-41; 16:4; Lk 11:29-32).

    *this sign is prophesized by Jesus in 2:18-20 but not fulfilled until chapter 20.
    The miracle when Jesus walked on the Sea of Galilee and calmed the storm was the eighth sign and a private revelation for the Apostles, which again identifies Jesus as the prophet "greater than Moses" and the divine Messiah of Daniel's vision (Dt 18:18).  The number eight is significant in Scripture and is symbolic of re-birth and resurrection (see the document "The Significance of Numbers in Scripture").  Jesus was resurrected on the day after the seventh day Sabbath, on the " eighth day" (the first day of the week, Sunday) of the New Covenant Sabbath of the Lord's Day (Catechism of the Catholic Church # 349; Mt 28:1, 5-6; Mk 16:2, 6; Lk 24:1-7; Jn 20:1 and 26 which reads literally in the Greek text, "eight days later").
