The Book of Daniel
After the Battle of Carchemish in 605 BC, the victorious Babylonians took possession of the defeated Assyrian Empire, including the vassal state of the Southern Kingdom of Judah. King Jehoiakim of Judah declared his allegiance to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon; however, Nebuchadnezzar took into captivity some boys of royal and noble birth to ensure the newly installed vassal king's loyalty and to educate the boys for service to Babylon. Among those young captives was Daniel who became God's prophet in exile while serving several pagan kings. During his many years living in exile, Daniel received a series of visions promising the deliverance of his people and giving him the historical countdown to the coming of the promised Redeemer-Messiah and His eternal Kingdom.
