The Book of Hosea

The Book of Hosea was written by Hosea son of Beeri, a man inspired by God to carry His message of repentance to the Northern Kingdom of Israel in the 8th-century BC. The book is among the most poetic of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. Yahweh's Bride, Israel, had become a rebellious and unfaithful spouse. God commanded Hosea to live out an example of Israel's failure by marrying an adulterous woman. The book's theme is a riv/rib, a covenant lawsuit announced by Yahweh against the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Most of the book is a variation of the theme of the Northern Kingdom's culpability in rebellion against Yahweh, the Divine Bridegroom, and the coming judgment. However, Yahweh declares Himself moved with compassion for His covenant people and His desire for reconciliation to take back His repentant covenant Bride. The second part of the book provides a recapitulation of the theme of sin, judgment, and the promise of renewal and restoration. References for the course are found in the Course Bibliography.
