The First Letter of Peter
In his first letter to the universal Church, St. Peter writes to Christians to encourage their faith in a time of trial. He urges them to continue to offer praise to God the Father who is the source of all mercy. The focus of his letter is that God's mercy is the basis for the New Covenant made through the redemptive work of God the Son in God's divine plan for mankind's salvation. Speaking of God's mercy as the foundation for the blessings received in the New Covenant in Christ, Peter asks all Christians to persevere in suffering and to appreciate that there is a continuity of the works of God's mercy in the Scriptures of the Old Testament that is fulfilled in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ in the New and eternal Covenant that is established in the blood of our Savior and Redeemer.
