The First Letter to Timothy
St. Paul's First Letter to St. Timothy is one of three letters referred to as Paul's "Pastoral Epistles." The letter addresses Timothy's relationship with the members of the faith communities in Ephesus and with their presbyters (priests). The letter also lists the necessary qualifications for bishops and deacons. However, the theme of the letter is Timothy's duty to preserve the purity of Church doctrine against false teaching and to protect the prophetic character of his office.
